In-Q-Tel (IQT) is a non-profit strategic investor that connects cutting edge startups to critical intelligence and defense missions. We combine deep technological expertise, broad venture capital networks, and long-term relationships with government partners to deliver unique capabilities and insights that address critical mission challenges.

 

The Technology Architect plays a central role in IQT’s investment activity. We pair with Investment Team Members to discover and close new investment opportunities. We support Program Managers and Project Engineers to execute work programs and deliver technology to mission.

 

On a daily basis, we:

  • Build close relationships with the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense to identify opportunities to upgrade tradecraft with emerging technology

 

  • Meet with startup founders and get hands-on with alpha products to evaluate startups’ offerings for technical credibility and mission relevance

 

  • Communicate technology trends and opportunities to broad audiences in writing and in person

 

  • Convene government and startup partners to match commercial products to mission needs, helping both sides envision new possibilities

 

  • Craft work programs that push startups’ products forward to address mission needs and advance commercial viability.

 

Each Technology Architect owns the vision for a particular technology area. The Enterprise Technologies Practice invests in technology areas including data science, data engineering, machine learning (AI/ML), IT operations, cloud orchestration, SecDevOps, statistics (including time series, geospatial, and graph statistics), spatial computing, natural language processing (NLP), and computer vision (CV). We are eager to hear about new technology areas that we should be paying attention to!

  

Responsibilities

 

  • Conduct technical diligence on investments in assigned technical areas.

 

  • Envision how IQT’s government partners could evaluate and adopt startup technology via work programs.

 

  • Draft and negotiate Statements of Work contracts between IQT and startups to formalize work programs.

 

  • Oversee work programs’ technical elements, assess work program deliverables, and collaborate with deal teams to resolve work program issues.

 

  • Develop Market Surveys, Architectures, Tech Briefs and other Situational Awareness Products to communicate market and technology trends to IQT’s government partners.

Key Qualifications

 

We expect all candidates to demonstrate:

 

  • Subject matter expertise in one or more technical fields relevant to the Enterprise Technology Practice

 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

 

  • Eligibility for access to classified information (you don’t need a clearance to apply, but we’ll submit you for one right away)

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline

 

  • At least 5 years professional experience, with some portion of that time involving technology development in a business or intelligence environment

 

  • Commitment to continued understanding of new technologies and their strategic advantages

  

Distinguishing Qualifications

 

We are most interested in candidates who demonstrate:

 

  • Enthusiasm for
    • Strategic tech forecasting (How will tech evolve over the next 5 years?)
    • Deal creation (Where should we invest today?)
    • Storytelling (How does this investment advance our overall strategy?)

 

  • Advanced studies in a relevant discipline, demonstrated by a graduate degree or equivalent professional experience

 

  • Problem solving skills to evaluate complex situations, identify root issues, write concise summaries, and propose considered solutions

 

  • Startup experience and an ability to thrive in a non-traditional, entrepreneurial environment

 

  • Ability to communicate complex technology subjects to both technical and non-technical audiences

 

  • Experience in both technical and proposal/contract writing

 

  • Confident and dynamic public speaking
