Associate Director, Data Analytics

Location: Boston, MA; Austin, TX; San Francisco, CA; or Washington, D.C., NYC

Our client, a finance and advisory nonprofit is looking to hire Associate Director for Data Analytics.

The role will further the development and execution of data analysis, data visualization, and data strategy workstreams across projects.  This position will support team learning and technical capacity development on data analysis and visualization.

Key activities include:

 Data Analytics

  • Data analysis. Use statistical software (such as Stata or R) to analyze project data, including coding administrative data sets and conducting advanced statistical analyses. Conduct reviews and quality control checks of data cleaning, structuring, and validation code. Lead user experience research to assess data systems, processes, and/or new tools and applications.
  • Visualizing and presenting data. Create and review data dashboards, interactive figures, and internal and external communication materials to support visual data storytelling. Identify the most appropriate data visualization tools to meet clients’ goals and objectives.
  • Implementing data equity principles. Ensure data analysis, data strategy, and data visualization workstreams follow best practices in data equity in terms of design, structure, and format. Bring a data equity lens to bear on each project assignment.
  • Data strategy. Advise clients on effective approaches to collect, organize, and utilize data sets to advance social impact goals, including how to develop data tools and products. Incorporate principals of participatory design, such as strategies to elevate community voice.
  • Project management. Develop project scope and work plans; execute against meeting schedules, timelines and work streams in order to guide a team throughout project duration

Support Proposals and Business Development:

  • Develop content and lead drafting of responses to proposal documents (i.e. RFPs, RFIs, NOFAs) and concept notes for potential data analytics project opportunities
  • Create materials and lead prospective business development calls to source data analytics project opportunities
  • Identify, build and maintain relationships with peers from key partner agencies and across sectors

Field Building

  • Attend conferences and pursue speaking engagements that support our data analytics work on impact investing and impact advisory field education
  • Write blog posts and support the creation of white papers and reports that publish key learnings and findings from our work
  • Contribute to and support research efforts in social issue areas and interventions that are new to the firm.

Firm Building

  • Coach and develop data analytics’ associates across project teams, including providing real-time feedback to team members in service of maximizing professional success and executing high-quality deliverables
  • Provide support to teams carrying out data analysis and data visualization tasks, including troubleshooting challenges and conducting testing and quality assurance on coding and product development.
  • Provide training to staff on statistical analysis software and how to use data visualization tools.
  • Contribute to capacity-building initiatives, such as recruiting, professional development, knowledge management, fundraising, or other internal projects

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of full-time professional experience with relevant and transferable skills related to data analysis, data visualization and data strategy.
  • Bachelor’s degree or related certificate in computer science, data analytics, economics, finance, engineering, or related field
  • Fluency in at least one programming language such as Stata, SAS, SQL, R, or Python
  • Fluency in at least one data visualization software such as Power Bi, Tableau or ArcGIS
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct user experience research
  • Experience in and understanding of applying a data equity lens to project work
  • Strong project management experience, ideally with demonstrated ability to lead multiple projects and manage junior staff members towards project completion, including conducting code reviews
  • Detail-oriented and adept at instituting quality control checks and ensuring accuracy in data analysis
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, with the ability to deliver quantitative and qualitative data in a compelling way, including the ability to explain complex data analysis and visualizations to a non-technical audience.

    • Experience working in or with the public sector, including familiarity with state, county, or city data systems and structures
