Green America is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a just and sustainable society by harnessing economic power for positive change. We are looking for a contractor to assist with the development of a report for our Hang Up on Fossil Fuels campaign.

Background:

The largest U.S. telecom companies collectively use over 30 million MWh to power their networks every year and until recently, the vast majority came from fossil fuels. Green America’s Hang Up on Fossil Fuels campaign mobilizes public pressure to urge the companies to reach 100 percent renewables by 2025. As part of this campaign, we publish an annual report detailing actual progress by the telecoms on adopting renewable energy and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as outline where the industry can make improvements. After years of pressure, the telecoms are becoming major corporate purchasers of clean energy and Green America believes they could do more to raise the standards of the rapidly expanding renewables industry regarding community equity, worker justice, and supporting local ecosystems. This report will delve into the goals of the energy justice movement and how companies can support these goals through their clean energy projects.

Description:

Green America seeks a writer and researcher with a background in energy justice to collaborate to our 2021 Clean Energy Calling report. Responsibilities include:

  • Compiling case studies of communities with decision-making power and control of local energy production, community solar initiatives, and efforts to disrupt utility monopolies.
  • Interviewing leaders in the energy justice movement to highlight their work and calls to action.
  • Researching clean energy companies with commitments and practices for building diversity, equity, and inclusion for workers and communities across their operations.
  • Drafting sections of the report based on the findings of research listed above.
  • Assisting in the research and documentation of major telecom companies’ policy and practices to develop a scorecard assessing social equity, energy, and transparency practices.

Process and Timeline:

You will provide research and writing to Green America’s Climate Campaigns Director who is overseeing research and development of the Clean Energy Calling report. The contractor will have an initial scope meeting to build on the existing outline for the report, as well as take part in weekly check-ins with the Climate Campaigns Director to ensure the project is moving forward on schedule and that the contractor has the resources needed to advance the work. The work will begin in early September and should be completed by late October/early November and your name will be listed as an author and researcher on the published report.

If interested: please send your resume and two published pieces in which you contributed writing and/or research to Beth Porter (she/her) at bporter@greenamerica.org.
