This month’s CatchUp is with MomUp superstar, Rebecca Gotlib, now an Engineer at Aclarity!
Tell us a bit about you!
I graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. I started off in the Prosthetics and Orthotics field working as a COA and moved into the renewable energy industry. I recently worked with Vanadium Redox Flow batteries and helped manage a battery installation in Mallorca.
I am fully committed to using my skillset to create a sustainable future for generations to come.
How has MomUp helped you?
MomUp helped me secure a job working with Aclarity. Katie was extremely helpful and was very prompt with her responses which made me feel comfortable to reach out at any time with questions. I currently love my job now and am happy I connected with Katie.
What career or academic highlight are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my time managing and installing the energy storage system in Mallorca. This was very challenging for me because I did not speak any Spanish and did not have my full team with me. I had to learn very quickly and stay confident in high stress situations. The installation was successful and I made my company proud.
What is the first job you ever had?
My first job was at a local movie theater in my hometown (New City, NY). I worked there with my best friend and I loved eating the popcorn fresh out of the popper.
What are your best job search tips?
I would say my best advice is that every event can be used as networking. I joined an Ultimate Frisbee team and connected with someone on my team which helped me get my first Engineering job. Everytime I meet new people or go to a new event I always connect professionally also to see if there is any overlap. Don't be afraid to use your connections.
Advice on balancing work and personal life?
This one is hard for me. I think having a manager with similar values is important. Knowing that the more time you take for yourself on your off time will protect you from burn out later has really helped me.
What do you enjoy doing in your downtime?
I have been playing a lot of pool in my downtime, reading, and doing the occasional craft.
