CatchUp - Zara Mahmood

This month’s CatchUp is with MomUp superstar, Zara Mahmood, now the Corporate Counsel at the Company Counsel.

Tell us a bit about you!

I grew up in Western Massachusetts, where I also attended UMass, Amherst to study psychology, anthropology and political science. After graduating, I took a brief but memorable excursion out of New England to attend law school in Washington, D.C. While there, I loved exploring the Smithsonian museums and trying new restaurants across the city. Since returning to Massachusetts to begin my legal career, I have worked as a corporate attorney. Outside of my job, I volunteer with the Muslim American Society (MAS) Boston Chapter, where I lead outdoor excursions, such as hikes and kayaking trips, to help young professionals reconnect with nature and build community. I also share my home with my new cat, Pearl, who keeps life fun and lively.

How has MomUp helped you?

MomUp played an essential role in helping me land my current position. The recruiter, Katie, I worked with was incredibly kind, proactive, and communicative, which immediately eased the doubts I had after hearing horror stories about recruiters who disappear mid-process. MomUp truly listened to what I was looking for, guided me throughout the search, and ultimately connected me with a role that not only meets but exceeds my expectations.

What career highlight are you most proud of?

One highlight I’m especially proud of is being selected as the class speaker at my law school graduation. After attending law school during COVID, when so many of our classes, conversations, and connections took place remotely, it was incredibly meaningful to finally gather in person to address the class. Having the opportunity to speak to my peers and the broader school community about what we experienced, both inside and outside the virtual classroom, was an honor and a moment I’ll always carry with me.

First job you ever had

My first job was as a tutor at Kumon Math and Reading when I was in high school. I spent most of my time grading the work of pre-teens who were, admittedly, much better at math than I was, and who didn’t need an answer sheet to know the correct answers. It was a humbling and humorous introduction to the working world.

What are your best job search tips?

Remember that the perfect job for you is out there, even if the search feels discouraging at times. Don’t settle for something that’s just “good enough” simply because it’s available. The right recruiter can make a world of difference as they can help you navigate the process, advocate for you, and steer you toward opportunities that truly fit your goals, values, and skill set.

Advice on balancing work and personal life?

Balancing work and life can be challenging, but staying grounded in your “why” is very important. As a workforce, we often forget to ask ourselves why we are working in the first place and what role we want work to play in our lives. Once we reconnect with the fact that we are daughters, sisters, friends or even new cat moms, we can recalibrate our priorities and adjust how we use our time. Staying mindful of who we are outside the office helps restore balance and perspective.

What do you enjoy doing in your downtime?

In my downtime, I love getting hands-on with DIY projects, whether that’s tackling small home improvements, refinishing furniture, or experimenting with crafts. Thrifting is another favorite pastime. I enjoy searching through vintage and secondhand stores in search of unique pieces with a bit of history that I may or may not disrupt with a coat of paint.
